The Life and Times of Byron Burke

Life is full of twists and turns. The paths that we choose dictate what our lives will become. But there are times when an inner voice speaks that reassures that the path that has been chosen is in fact the right one. On this journey are endless possibilities, trials and tribulations and ultimately a reward bigger than one can ever hope or dream of. This is the story of Byron Burke.

As a child he always felt like an outsider. Shy and unable to fit in, he was uncomfortable in his own skin. Not the best performer in school he would find himself repeating the sixth grade and skipping school for shame and embarrassment. His only solace was music.

His passion for music and dancing would be the impetus for his current iconoclastic status as one of the pioneers of House music. At the age of 14 he would become a member of the House music dance group “The Shy Boys” from the Westside of Chicago. The legendary dance battles held in Stevenson Park would serve as the catalyst for many other moments that would further solidify Byron’s place in the annals dance and House music.

Dancing would lead to his interest in DJing and he would invest hours into honing his craft. A few years and 200 mix tapes under his belt he would get the shot he needed to show off his skills. Byron was brought to the attention of legendary Chicago club promoter Terrible Ted and was given the break he needed at the tender age of 16. Byron was given the chance to spin at special events and at clubs along side such noted Chicago House DJs as Tyree Cooper, Lil Louis, Steve “Silk” Hurley, Mike Dunn, The Hot Mix 5, Terry Hunter, Fast Eddie, K Alexi and Jessie Saunders.

As history has proven time and time again, life throws many curve balls and although at the time one may not understand why things happen the way that they do, in the end the rewards prove to be worth the sacrifice. In a pivotal moment Byron was faced with a decision. An inner voice told him to quit school and follow his passion. While holding an album in his hand prophetically entitled “Music is the Key” by Steve “Silk” Hurley he called a number conveniently located on the album. The number happened to be to the president of DJ International Records, Rocky Jones. Mr. Jones picked up the phone and a meeting was set up. A contract was offered and a career was launched.

Byron ended up quitting high school and as a result was kicked out of the house by his parents. Left to fiend for himself, his survival instincts kicked into high gear. Following that inner voice he would be lead to further nurture and hone his creative and musical gifts. He eventually created a group called “B Rude Inc.” and later would become a part of House music legendary group “Ten City.” From this he would be responsible for writing such iconoclastic hits as “Devotion” and “That’s the Way Love Is” which can still be heard on urban radio stations to this day! Ten City had 1.2 million global record sales. As co-writer and producer for the groups albums Foundation, State of Mind, That Was Then, This is Now, and No House Big Enough, he was instrumental in making hits that would spawn ten Top 20 Billboard Magazine dance songs, five Top 10 Billboard Magazine Sales Chart Singles, ten Top U.K. Pop Chart Singles, a Gold album from South Africa and a Silver album from the U.K. that received international acclaim on four continents.

The eventual disbandment of the group would not mark the demise of Byron’s career. It would only lead to further opportunities in the industry as he became the writer and producer for countless other artists on the dance music scene. He would later become the Co-Executive Vice President of the music division for Prelude Music & Film Works that released the 1998 motion picture for New Line Cinema’s “Lost in Space.” To add to his repertoire he would become the co-writer and producer for such labels as Atlantic Records, East/West Records, MAW Records, Maxi Records, Strictly Rhythm Records, Continue Music and Road Runner Music out of Germany, as well as Chicago Traxs, Strictly Hype, Bright Star/Dance Maina, Columbia Records, Universal Records and Capital Records.

With a music career that spans over 20 years, his life’s journey would still allow for more twists and turns. Meandering though a plethora of experiences Byron never forgot that inner voice that told him to follow his passion. Taking heed to what he deemed a divine calling he would launch an online ministry fittingly called “Divine Prosperity.” Byron Burke Ministries is the umbrella and in conjunction with New Covenant Ministries International he has created a virtual ministry that empowers people of all walks of life regardless of race, previous church denominational affiliation, gender, or social status through prophetic teachings, scripture and the power of the Holy Spirit. Just like he heard the call to follow his divine gift and talents he encourages others to do the same through “kingdom building principles” outlined in the Christian Bible.

Keeping in line with divine empowerment Byron has also launched the entertainment company BB Media Global Group that specializes in artist development and internet marketing. His company also assists entrepreneurs and new and expanding companies in finding venture capital and angel investors for their business.

Holding fast to his first love of House Music he has also launched the House Music Channel which features interviews, DJ mix sets, news, special event coverage, and videos from the leading recording artists, DJs and record producers in the Dance music industry.

Byron Burke went from a shy misfit with failing grades to a multi talented tour de force. His tireless pursuit of endeavors that not only call upon his talents but the talents and empowerment of others is a true testament of his give back mentality. In following his dreams and listening to that divine inner voice Byron Burke has become one of the leading business men in dance music today. The world has no doubt heard the last of Byron Burke and in all of his accomplishments he has always stood firm on this one belief “Put God first and everything else will follow.”

The House Music Channel Presents: DJ Tanario from Atlanta, GA

About TANARIO

I was born into this world on January 13, 1977 in Atlanta Georgia at Grady Hospital. The product of parents, Carolyn and Bernard King, who both have extremely high appreciations for music, of all forms. I can remember getting my first record player. It was a small Fisher Price record player with 4 plastic records, and had to be wound up to play. In hindsight, I realized I was only a year old. Quickly I grew bored of my toy and preferred the real thing.

The very next year I got my first “real” record player. It resembled a suitcase, with red and white stripes on the top, (If you have one, let me know…cause I wanna buy it…lol). Just about every Friday, my mom and I would visit Third World Enterprises on Decatur Street in Atlanta to buy records. At that time 45s were a dollar, and since my record player was small, I could only play 45s, well at least until I broke off the lid to it…talk about ingenuity! Everywhere I went; my record player went with me. My first 45 was Heartbreak Hotel by The Jacksons. I think I played that record until it was no longer audible.

As the years went on, my fascination for music, records in particular, intensified. When my parents had parties I wanted to play the records…and I did. I became very familiar with artists such as, The Manhattans, The O’Jays, Jean Knight, O.V. Wright, Enchantment, Johnny Taylor, and the list goes on. There were days I begged to play records in the early morning, and even late at night. Even when I visited relatives’ houses, I wanted to play records. It was kinda weird, because when there was a “component set” in the room, my attention was completely fixed to it, and nothing else mattered. Eventually, the cassette era would set in, and things changed for me a little. In the mid 80s, the cassette was the form of media which everyone raved. Where it was the latest innovation in the music world, the cassette never really intrigued me the way vinyl did. The concept of pushing buttons and watching two wheels spin was boring. Nevertheless, I jumped on board and began recording various radio shows (Now, the recording aspect was kinda cool!).

The radio show that comes to mind is “The Fresh Party” on V-103, in Atlanta. They would play all of the rap artists of that time, from MC Shy-D, 2 Live Crew to Moni Love and Salt n Pepa, just to name a few. I mastered splicing tapes in order to create a seamless effect. But I quickly grew bored with that, and took a hiatus. At age 11, I began playing the trumpet. I chose that instrument only because of the way it looked. What can I say, I’m visual…lol After getting to Columbia High School, my band director, Robert Coln strongly insisted that I play Baritone/Euphonium. Great decision, because I excelled greatly. I later became section leader, ultimately making drum major. This is where my music career halted…at least for a while. After High School, I joined the Marine Corps as a 1st and 2nd echelon mechanic. Great experience! Would I do it again? No. After the Marine Corps, life took its twist and turns and low and behold I turn back to music. In 2000 I met the person who I can attribute a lot of my progression.

Tonya Gaston was probably the pivotal person on my music journey. Born in Chicago, she knew her music, especially House Music. She bombarded me with early mixes from a few legendary DJs. Including, Larry Levan, Frankie Knuckles, Ron Hardy, to name a few. It was at this time my thirst for music again redeveloped. It seems House Music may be the thirst quencher I’ve longed for. It’s creative, different, intriguing. I feel stimulated again. In 2003, I stumbled upon what is now the legendary MJQ here in Atlanta, where I became a regular, by the way. Kai Alce and Cullen Cole were the DJs at the time. I stepped into the DJ booth, and was floored to see turntables! Wow, they are playing with records, I said to myself in astonishment. That was the night; I realized there was still hope for a guy like me.

Just when I thought vinyl was a thing of the past, I saw otherwise. These are just a few things that have brought me to where I am today. A House Music DJ. I appreciate the beauty and creativity of House Music. No other form of music stimulates my senses as does House Music. I try to convey that through my mixes and hopefully I can convey that through you. Tanario

TERRY HUNTER

With his roots intertwined in house music for the past 15 years, Terry Hunter has traveled the globe sharing his passion for soulful house music while continuing to produce dance-floor packing hits for his Ts Box record label. Pleased with the success he has garnered in the house music community, but still looking to fulfill his appetite with new genres of music Terrys latest adventure in his musical journey showcases his production talent in the hip hop arena.

Born in August 1970 on the Southside of Chicago, Terry was introduced to music at a young age, I really didn't know I could make a living at becoming a DJ at first. I just thought it would be an expensive hobby because at the time I was a vinyl junkie which was an expensive habit. Terry continues, My love became so strong for DJing that I spent entire summers in my bedroom & local records stores just hanging around & not playing with my friends. Thats when a few years later, I knew in my heart this is what I was born to do. Having the influence of music all around him, at a time when the Chicago house music scene was on the verge of an international explosion, Terry debuted onto the scene with his first release, a house track entitled Madness. I created a big buzz on the record by playing it myself at various parties," Terry states, It started out as a basement track, but became much more.

Having made an impact on the local scene with his first track, he moved on to create a style of spinning that consisted of collaborating great songs with a unique soulful presence. Being one of the masterminds behind UBQ, he then teamed up with Music Plant, a music production and talent management company. Terry began DJing throughout the world enlightening his fans with his signature sound which has become a blueprint for many DJs to follow.

During these travels, various musical influences abroad expanded his outlook, which allowed him to include some of it into his production. Terry has lent his production talents to classics such as When I Fell In Luv, Sweet Music, Out on the Dance Floor and the club crossover anthem from Georgie Porgie, Life Goes On. He has also remixed tracks for artists such as Michael Jackson, Twista, Mary J. Blige, and Masters At Work. Terry has also co-written tracks with Raheem DeVaughn, You (Jive), Syleena Johnson, And He Makes Me Say (Jive) and Rhymefest Mr. Bluecollar (J Records). Alongside longtime friend Kenny Dope, Terry also remixed the Kanye West track Addiction (Dope Wax), which has become a staple in DJ record crates.

An active member of the Violator All Star DJs, Terry is excited about his work with fellow Chi-town native Rhymefest. The two have formed Plugg City an outlet for Chicago hip hop and R&B. Terry has also been instrumental in the development of Twone Gabz an up and coming Chicago hip hop artist.

Asked about the future, Terry declares, I see myself with plenty of hit records while trying to educate the younger generation to appreciate musicianship along with their own individual style.
